Not all films would leave you in awe. If last year it was Robo, this year it is 7th sense for the movie is bold in conception, big in execution and beautiful in packaging. An important message has been conveyed without giving that bore-feeling to the audience. But it should also be said that the movie is preachy in some places.

Produced by Udhayanidhi Stalin's Red Giant Movies and directed by A R Murugadoss, this Surya-Shruti Haasan starrer reminds us the greatness of ancients. It also points out that the present generation doesn't have any idea about its forefathers, and laugh at them without understanding their value.

Story:
Bodhi Dharma (Surya) is a Pallava prince, who is an expert at all big thing. Be it medicine or martial arts or genetics, he is the best. One day, he is sent to China by the gurumatha. Initially opposed, he was later accepted by everyone in the foreign land and they start worship him for his qualities and skills.

As centuries pass, modern day China wants to control India, and for that, it sends Dongli (Johnny Tri Nguyen) to Chennai to start a bio war by spreading a dangerous disease. In the meantime, Subha Srinivasan (Sruthi Haasan) finds that circus artiste Aravindh (Surya) shares the DNA of Bodhi Dharman.

She tries to give life to Bodhi Dharman to end the menace of Dongli. But Dongli, who is capable of doing anything, does all impossible bad things, thanks to his 'Nokku Varmam', a martial art which was actually taught to the Chinese by Bodhi Dharman. What's next is the climax….

Performances:
Surya shines bright in both his roles. He aptly fits in the attire of a saint and makes us to believe that he is a circus artiste too. Shruthi Haasan is the daughter of Kamal Haasan has got a meaty role in her very first movie itself. Johnny Tri Nguyen is the right choice, to spit venom through eyes.

Harris Jayaraj's music is old wine in new bottle, while Ravi K Chandran's cinematography is fresh. It refreshes us all through the movie. Antony's editing has made the film script, but some more chopping is needed. But for the loads of advice the film gives to the audience.

Plus Points:

  • Concept of the film
  • Suriya’s performance
  • Technical and production values
  • Climax fight sequence

Minus Points:
  • Slow pace
  • Weak romance track
  • Dragged sequences
  • Lack of intensity and emotional depth
  • Music

Analysis:
Murugadoss has mixed a bit of factual history to modern science in this. For starters, he must be really appreciated for coming up with a bold theme and making an attempt to show the great history and great men of our nation. However, there is a fine line between picking up a good concept and executing it with the right voltage. If it was not for Suriya’s aura and the strong technical values, the film would have been bland.

This movie appears to be the idea of an A grade director executed by a B-grade director. Generally people expect something more sensible from Murugudoss. But that lacked here.

First half is ok but the second half got derailed. Murugudoss made vain attempt to bring grip in narration due to lack of proper research. Even Operation Red idea became silly. The climax is very long with 40 minutes and that itself shows how bad the screenplay is.

It can be said that there is no directorial brilliance as the plot was predictable and all that is required was to fill the two hours plus duration. There is no doubt that this is a rather unique storyline in the recent times but if only it was trimmed in the right manner and some dose of emotion and dramatic values were added to it, the film would have been a success.

At the box office, the openings will be good but audience is advised to step into the theatres without high expectations. Overall, this would not make any positive impact at box office.

Final Verdict:Beautiful thought, The first and last 20mins of the film is okay and remaining part is boring which is does not exactly pick up pace and the Ghajini team has not succeeded at this time. 7th sense is an average entertainer.
